What do you get when you put architecture, research, psychology and advertising together? You get me, Greg Alder

After studying architecture then psychology, who’d have guessed I’d spend most of my adult life as writer and creative director in advertising agencies in Australia, Europe and the Americas?

Certainly not my dad, an accountant. And certainly not vocation counsellors – they didn’t even acknowledge that advertising existed. I got into advertising almost by accident.

I was working in a marketing research company that happened to be owned by an ad agency. We were downstairs from the creative department. I could tell from the laughter upstairs that they were having a lot more fun than we were downstairs.

I asked the creative director to hire me. He gave me a brief and told me to come back when I was happy with my ideas. I did and he gave me a job as a writer.

What has all this experience taught me?

First, that work should be fun. If you don’t enjoy it, don’t do it.

The second thing I have learnt is you need solid foundations. You might think that’s the architecture speaking, but really it’s a lesson from advertising – don’t start to create an ad campaign until you know what your audience needs to hear and how you can help them.

I have spent the past few years coaching business leaders – to be inspiring leaders, pitch for new business, give memorable presentations and build great brands, amongst other subjects.

And that brings me to the third lesson I have learnt. The techniques that corporate leaders need to build their businesses work just as effectively when used to build work-from-home businesses and personal brands. In fact, I believe that applying these principles can dramatically reduce the shocking failure rate in MLM.

So, I have made it a mission to research the reasons people fail, and to find the products that can help them succeed. You can find the results of my 2 years of research here on this website.

When not working, I cook, read, surf and work out. I live on the sub-tropical far north coast of New South Wales, Australia with my gorgeous wife and business partner Sharon.
